Paris has suffered attacks by Islamic terrorists recently.
In one incident on Jan. 7, 2015, the terrorist group,
Al-Qaeda in Yeman, claimed responsibility for the attack on
a French newspaper, Charlie Hebdo. The paper specializes in political
and cultural satire, that is, making fun of people and situations.
Twelve newspaper journalists were killed by two brothers who ran
through the streets carrying machine guns and shouting
“Allahu Akbar” and “We have avenged the prophet.” Before they were
killed in a shootout with police, the brothers had said that they wanted
to die as martyrs for the cause of Islam. While the motive for their
attack is unknown, people have guessed that they were upset by political cartoons and pictures of the prophet Muhammad, which are forbidden in Islam.
With a doctorate in journalism, I am concerned about the issue of freedom of the press in the world today because control of the mass media is one of the most effective tools dictators and tyrants use to brainwash and control human beings. Countries which have been influenced by the Bible generally enjoy the most freedom and the highest quality of life. So if we want to increase human freedom and the quality of human life around the world, we need to increase the amount of Bible knowledge and the practice of its teachings. Then we can fulfill Christ’s promise that we will know the truth and the truth will make us free (John 8:32).
